Writing for YWAM
You don't have to be a famous writer to write for YWAM! Everyone has a story to tell and a unique perspective. Distributed six times each year, the IY E-zine is distributed throughout YWAM and will soon be available in multiple language editions. It will also be posted on ywam.org. If you haven't signed up yet to receive it (it's free), go to www.ywamlist.org/iy. We're always looking for news, staff profiles, updates, events, movements and trends within YWAM for the e-zine and ywam.org. If you have news from your ministry to share, we'll coach you through the process and help you write the article if you like. Things to include in the article are: News Article: Names, places, dates, and what happened. The emphasis is usually on people, changed lives, and/or significant events. The article should not be filled with statistics or read like an outreach report, but instead have a "people experience" angle to it and hopefully include quotes. It shouldn't exceed 500 words. Significant Event (i.e. Olympic outreach, major YWAM gathering): Although some statistics will probably need to be included, the focus of the article should still be on changed lives. Include a brief summary of the event, names, dates, location, and include a changed-life anecdote with quotes. It shouldn't exceed 500 words. YWAM Responses to Crises (i.e. the tsunami, Pakistan earthquake): Although some statistics will probably need to be included, the focus of the article should still be on changed lives. Begin with a short description of the crisis, and include names, dates, location, and a changed-life anecdote with quotes. If you worked alongside any other relief organizations, include that as well. Please keep the length under 500 words. If your story doesn't fit into these categories, that's okay. Ask us about anything -- we're open to your ideas! An Important Word About Photos We must have at least one photo for each article. Because the IY is now an e-zine, any digital photo resolution is fine. Please include photos when you email us your story, but if you don't have photos, send the story anyway; we may have file photos that would be appropriate for your article. In terms of the type of photos to send, we prefer close-ups of YWAMers in action, involved in ministry, not impersonal group shots or scenery. Go Manual The YWAM Go Manual is distributed throughout the YWAM world and beyond and is a powerful recruitment tool. All the stories in the Go Manual are highly photo-driven. Again, the type of photos we need are people, faces, and ministry in action. The stories themselves are shorter pieces (100-250 words) and focus on changed lives. They should center around either a specific YWAMer or a specific person whose life was impacted by YWAM. You don't have to be a writer; just send us your story "as is" and we will take care of getting it written. The stories we're looking for should center around specific people (YWAMers and/or those they've reached) and not around statistics or an outreach overview. We're looking for stories about people. Please be sure and include the names and some information about the people in the story. If security is a factor, just let us know and we will use fictitious names. This could be great free publicity for your ministry! Most importantly, your story must be accompanied by a high resolution photo(s) (300 dpi or original hard copy from film).
