Pre-production

Pre-production is the phase of your project where you organize and plan your video.
Videos are as much about organizing as they are creativity.

Start by asking yourself or your client the following questions:
  • What is the purpose of the video?
  • What do I want to communicate?
  • Who is the intended audience?
  • How will the program be used?
  • What do I hope to accomplish through this project?

Come up with a concept & style, then organize your project:
  • Network.
  • Line up all your interviews and shooting locations.
  • Find the elements you need such as props, sets, permissions, etc.
  • If you are doing a drama, you will write your script and either make storyboards or create a shot list to keep you on schedule & to remind you of all the shots you need to get.  (Storyboards are not generally used for news and documentary-style videos; these tend to be interview-driven, so scripts are written later.)
